Discussion Points

Read Poems to Tame the Monster in You, and Others Too Extracts from Poems to Tame the Monster in You, and Others Too. These poems are on track 92 of the CD The Monster on Top of the Bed and Other Stories and Poems.  I believe that they help to build self esteem in children, provide interestng life insights and are just fun.  I dedicate the poem "More Than a Dream" to Billy Collins, a former Poet Laureate of the U.S.A., who inspires whenever he speaks.  I dedicate the poems "I'm Making a List" and "Fun" to Shel Silverstein.  When my daughter was young, she loved to hear me read his poetry.  I shamelessly admit that I copied Shel's style in these two poems.  I hope I succeed.  "The Wavy Line Theory" is completely my own idea.  Here's a link to a complete discussion about the concept.  I dedicate "Pure Gangster"  to Shirley Howlett who encouraged me to write this piece for a fund raiser at the National Auto Museum, Reno, NV (Yes, the car actually does exist. Check it out.)  After I wrote the poem, Shirley backed me into a corner and made me submit my work to my favorite poetry magazine Mobius, the Poetry Magazine and "Season Shift", a haiku, to Jean Hull Herman, a "Red Car Girl" and a former editor of Mobius who inspired many poets with a simple promise, fulfilled:  Send her your three best poems.  If she didn't publish them, she would send suggestions for improvement.  Check out her site, particularly the poem "Red Car Girl."
